The extreme terrain and climate conditions of the eastern front gave rise to a requirement for a new military truck to be developed, capable of coping both with the most demanding terrain of muddy Russian roads and remaining fully operational and reliable even in very deep frost. Thus in 1943, the Kopo ivnice Tatra automobile plant, at that time controlled by Ringhoffer, launched a project to the design of H. Ledwinka for a truck which was to become a true legend - designated T111. The German army contracted for 906 of these trucks during world war II.
